It's Kitten Season - and We Need Your Help
Each spring and summer, thousands of vulnerable kittens are born across our community. This year, we’re facing an especially tough challenge.
Due to the fire at our Detkin/Oates Animal Community Center, our shelter capacity is significantly limited. While we continue to care for animals in need, we can’t do it alone.
Now more than ever, we’re counting on the compassion of our community to help us protect and care for kittens who need support. Donate supplies and help give vulnerable kittens the care they deserve.
What You Can Do If You Find Kittens
Your first instinct may be to scoop them up and bring them in—but in most cases, the best thing you can do is to leave them alone.
Don’t Kit-nap Kittens!
Kittens often appear abandoned when mom is actually nearby, out searching for food or hiding from people. She is their best chance at survival. Here’s what to do:
- Take note of the exact time and location.
- Leave the area completely.
- Return in 8-12 hours to check back.
When You Return:
- Kittens are gone: That’s good! Mom came back.
- Kittens are still there: They may be orphaned and in need of care. Call us at (408) 262-2133, ext. 110 or email Intake@hssv.org to discuss how you can help.
Understanding our Kitten Intake Process
Our ability to take in kittens changes daily based on available space, foster homes, and where the kittens were found. At this time, we are only accepting kittens from Milpitas, Saratoga, San Jose, and Cupertino. Before bringing any kittens in, please call us to confirm we’re able to take them.
